Vancouver Whitecaps v Houston Dynamo: Sartini eyeing ´huge statement´ win

Whitecaps head coach Vanni Sartini wants his team to put out a statement when they host Houston Dynamo in MLS on Saturday.

The Whitecaps are flying high this season after a five-match unbeaten streak in MLS has seen them move up to fourth in the Western Conference, just eight points off top spot with two games in hand.

While many did not expect to see Vancouver sitting so high in the table, Sartini is keen to prove why there should not be any doubts about his team s capabilities.

If we do a great job, and we win, I think it s a huge statement to tell everyone we are a top-four team, and we are not there accidentally but because we deserve it, Sartini said.

I think that should be one of the things to ignite us for a good performance because one of the cr…

Fabio Cannavaro, one of the greats – out of Italy’s challenge for Euro 2008

Italian football has been rocked by the news that inspirational captain Fabio Cannavaro will not be able to play in the European Championships.

Cannavaro collided with teammate Giorgio Chiellini in training and landed awkwardly on his ankle, causing substantial damage to his ligaments and ruling him out of the tournament.

Italy have called up Fiorentina s Alessandro Gamberini as a replacement and they have cover in the squad with Andrea Barzagli and Marco Materazzi, while Chiellini and Christian Panucci can play at centre back rather than full back.

Despite the adequate replacements they have and the fact that legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is likely to take over as captain, the loss of Cannavaro cannot be underestimated.

Ballon d´Or 2018: The top 30 in full after Modric walks away with the top prize

Luka Modric has ended Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi s 10-year domination of the Ballon d Or by claiming world football s most coveted individual prize.

Modric helped Real Madrid to their third consecutive Champions League trophy before the midfield maestro played a pivotal role in Croatia s surprise run to the World Cup final.

Ronaldo finished second, unable to add a sixth trophy to his collection, while France and Atletico Madrid s Antoine Griezmann completed a Messi-less top three.

Here, we look at how the jury voted to rank the players selected as the 30 best on the planet by France Football.

Simeone: Atletico had a rough patch in 2016

Diego Simeone insists he has no regrets over Atletico Madrid s 2016 form after seeing his side come on strong during the second half of the season.

Four of Atleti s five defeats in Spain s top flight came before the turn of the year, with only leaders Barcelona getting the better of them in 2017 to date.

The Champions League semi-finalists have edged ahead of Sevilla in the battle for third place – a position they have filled for the past two seasons since their 2013-14 LaLiga triumph.

Simeone s men have displayed title-worthy form from January onwards but the Argentine was not pondering what might have been ahead of Tuesday s home match against fifth-placed Villarreal.

Every year brings difficulties that you have to get through, he said. No year is si…

Spain´s Class of 2008 out to prove its a classic vintage

A black political figure later to become president was sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa, Can t Buy Me Love was number one in Britain, Cassius Clay upset Sonny Liston to win the world heavyweight title, Tokyo staged the 18th Olympic Games and here in Vienna Inter Milan won the Europe Cup.

The year was 1964 and in Spain it will be remembered as the year La Furia Roja were crowned champions of Europe.

Fans would surely have celebrated the title even more enthusiastically if they d known that this was to be their country s one and only trophy in the intervening four-and-a-half decades.

In Vienna on Sunday that title famine could end when a classic Spanish vintage take on Germany in what promises to be a memorable Euro 2008 final.

On this day in 2019: England lose long unbeaten qualifying record in Prague

England suffered their first qualifying defeat in a decade on this day in 2019 as they slipped to a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Czech Republic in Prague.

Gareth Southgate’s men went into the game knowing victory would put them through to Euro 2020 with three matches to spare, and many thought it would be done with ease given the 5-0 thrashing England inflicted on the Czechs at Wembley a few months prior.

More of the same seemed on the cards when Harry Kane slotted home a fifth-minute penalty to put England in the driving seat.

However, the lead lasted just four minutes before the hosts drew level when Jakub Brabec bundled home a corner, and from then on, the Czechs played with increasing confidence as they chased victory at the Sinobo Stadium.
