Former England midfielder Rodwell joins Western Sydney Wanderers

Former England international Jack Rodwell has joined A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2021-22 season.

The 30-year-old ex-Everton and Manchester City midfielder had been without a club since being released by Sheffield United in June.

Rodwell, who only made two appearances in his 18 months with the Blades, spent a fortnight training with Wanderers and on Thursday signed a one-season deal.

This move is really exciting for me, I ve been looking at the opportunity to play in Australia for a couple of months and with my wife being from Western Sydney, the Wanderers was the perfect destination,  said Rodwell.

Australia is like a second home to me, it s my favourite country on Earth, it s where my wife and her family are from; we love the pla…

Slot doubles down on selection policy ahead of Champions League opener

Arne Slot hit back at critics following his first defeat as Liverpool head coach but is relishing his first Champions League game in charge of the Reds against Milan.

After starting his Liverpool tenure with three wins from three, Slot s side were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest last weekend upon their return from the international break.

It marked the Dutchman s first loss since replacing Jurgen Klopp, with Forest securing their first triumph at Anfield since 1969.

Slot named an unchanged team for the fourth consecutive game since taking over at Liverpool against Forest, with many questioning his decision to do so.

But speaking ahead of their encounter at the San Siro on Tuesday, Slot doubled down on his selection policy during his early tenure…

Forest pay FA Cup tribute to Liverpool´s 97 victims of Hillsborough disaster

Nottingham Forest will leave 97 seats empty when they face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday in tribute to the fans who died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster.

It was Forest who were Liverpool s opponents in the FA Cup semi-final at the home of Sheffield Wednesday in April 1989.

Those who lost their lives after a crush on the over-crowded Leppings Lane terrace were supporting Liverpool that day.

It remains a tragedy that touches both clubs, and the victims will be remembered when the sides meet for the first time in 23 years.

Two-time European Cup winners Forest have been outside the top flight of English football since 1999, meaning the once great rivalry that existed between them and Liverpool has gone cold, but the chance to reach a cup semi-…

Koeman hits out at fixture schedule after losing Dembele to injury

Ronald Koeman has once again criticised the scheduling of Barcelona s LaLiga fixtures after losing Ousmane Dembele to injury.

Dembele suffered an elongation in the hamstring of his right leg in Saturday s 2-1 loss to Cadiz and is facing another spell on the sidelines.

The France international joins a growing list of injured players at Barca, with Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati, Sergi Roberto and Samuel Umtiti also ruled out.

Koeman is unsure how long the injury-plagued Dembele will be out but suggested this latest setback would have been avoided if his side were given a different kick-off slot.

It s a shame to lose another player to injury, he said at a news conference ahead of Tuesday s Champions League clash with Juventus.

He noticed something in the…

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United: Electrifying Mane and Salah keep up 100 per cent record

Sadio Mane continued his electrifying Liverpool form by scoring twice as the Reds came from behind to beat Newcastle United 3-1 and maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.

The Senegalese was seen venting his frustration at Mohamed Salah – who got the Reds third – despite scoring against Burnley before the international break, though he seemed rather more relaxed as he took his domestic tally to four for the season.

Jetro Willems opened the scoring early on with a stunning first Premier League goal, but Mane levelled 21 minutes later with a similarly impressive finish and then punished a Martin Dubravka howler to ensure Liverpool led at half-time.

Salah eventually finished Newcastle off 18 minutes from time, justifiably going it alone after critici…

Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Bernardo Silva from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, according to . The report has claimed that Ligue 1 champions PSG have offered Brazil international forward Neymar to sweeten the deal, but Premier League champions City have turned it down.

The 27-year-old, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, made 33 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for City last season. Silva scored eight goals and gave…

Bayern Munich 1-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Champions stunned as Bundesliga returns

Bayern Munich were beaten for just the third time in the Bundesliga this season as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Monchengladbach as German football returned from its mid-season break.

First-half goals from Florian Neuhaus and Stefan Lainer cancelled out Robert Lewandowski s opener at the Allianz Arena, and Julian Nagelsmann s men were unable to find a way back into the game in the second period.

The defending champions had been hit by numerous positive COVID-19 cases in the build-up and were missing several key players including Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Kingsley Coman, Alphonso Davies and Leroy Sane.

However, in a game behind closed doors with the snow falling in Munich, a nonetheless strong Bayern starting line-up was unable to avenge t…

Madrid star Kroos fires back at Chelsea´s Mount in ´losing sleep´ spat

Toni Kroos hit back at Mason Mount after the Chelsea midfielder took exception to the Real Madrid star s comments ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg.

Kroos said prior to Madrid s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday that he never lost sleep over an opponent during his illustrious 15-year career.

Mount made note of that remark after Chelsea advanced 3-1 on aggregate to set up a Champions League final showdown against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

I saw one of their players say before that he doesn t lose sleep over individuals, Mount told CBS Sports.

But I think as a team, they need to lose sleep over us as a team.

Kroos responded in a tweet on Thursday, paying a sharp-edged compliment in the process.

Chelsea need to find nasty streak and goals will come – Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino lamented that Chelsea were “not nasty enough” in attack as Brentford won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to send his team to a third home Premier League defeat of the season.

Victory for the visitors, earned with second-half goals from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo, maintained their 100 per cent record on this ground since being promoted to the top flight in 2021 and ended Chelsea’s run of three league games unbeaten.

The hosts failed to take advantage of a first half that they largely dominated, going close through Noni Madueke who struck the crossbar on his first start of the season.

Full time.
